Krishna Sutedja develops a musical language that connects the traditions of Balinese and Javanese gamelan with contemporary composition, electronic sound and experimental performance.
Rooted in Indonesian musical culture, his work draws inspiration from the rhythmic complexity, cyclical structures, interlocking patterns and distinctive sonorities of gamelan. At the same time, he explores how these musical principles can interact with electronics, contemporary instrumentation, improvisation and new approaches to composition.
Rather than treating gamelan as a fixed tradition, Krishna approaches it as a living and evolving musical language.
Traditional instruments may be combined with synthesizers, electronic textures, processed sound, voice, percussion, or musicians from different artistic backgrounds. Through these encounters, acoustic and electronic sound become part of the same musical environment.
His compositions often explore contrasts: repetition and transformation, structure and unpredictability, resonance and noise, tradition and experimentation.
The objective is not simply to fuse different genres, but to create a contemporary musical identity in which Indonesian musical knowledge remains at the core. At the same time, new technologies and artistic ideas expand its possibilities.
Through composition, performance and collaboration, Krishna continues to explore how the sound of gamelan can exist within the musical landscape of today, and how tradition can become a starting point for creating something new.
