Meet Krishna Sutedja
Krishna Sutedja is an Indonesian composer, Balinese & Javanese gamelan musician, multi-instrumentalist, and educator based in Brussels, Belgium.
Originally from Bali, he draws on the traditions of Balinese music while continually exploring new possibilities through contemporary composition, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cross-cultural exchange.
His work brings together the energy and complexity of gamelan with contemporary musical ideas, creating a dialogue between tradition and experimentation. As a performer and composer, Krishna has collaborated with musicians and ensembles across Europe and has presented his work in a variety of artistic and cultural contexts.
Artistic Lineage
Krishna's relationship with gamelan is deeply rooted in his family and cultural heritage in Bali. One of his greatest inspirations is his grandfather, Tjokorda Agung Mas Kanaka (Tjokorda Mas), a renowned Balinese gamelan musician, composer, and educator from Ubud. Tjokorda Mas was among the pioneering Balinese musicians who introduced gamelan education internationally and taught at UCLA from 1960 to 1966, contributing to the early development of Balinese gamelan studies in the United States. His artistic legacy remains an important influence on Krishna's work as a composer, performer and educator today. Alongside his creative practice, Krishna is deeply committed to education and cultural exchange. Through workshops, ensemble coaching and performances, he introduces Balinese gamelan to musicians, students and wider audiences while encouraging collective listening, creativity and collaboration.
He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Gamelan Mudrasvara Brussels, where he develops performances, educational projects and new repertoire for Balinese and Javanese gamelan.
